  • Bangkok Lane’s Seng Lee Cafe (the corner coffee shop) for mee goreng and mee rebus. After polishing that off, cross Jalan Burma to another corner coffee shop, Kedai Kopi Swee Kong for siam laksa or laksa lemak.

  • Junction of Lebuh Carnarvon and Lebuh Melayu is Kafe Ping Hooi for loh mee, duck egg char koay teow and loh bak.

  • Lorong Macalister’s Kedai Makanan Kim Lee and Seow Fong Lye Cafe for koay teow th’ng, chee cheong fun and char koay kak.
  • Kimberley Street koay chap then cross the road for stewed chicken claws.
  • Balik Pulau’s Nan Guang coffeeshop for laksa, assam and lemak. Wash them down with an order (or two) of nutmeg juice.
  • New Lane for chee cheong chouk (mixed pork porridge), fried oyster and poh piah.
  • Burma Road, One Corner Cafe for their curry mee. If you can wait, have the hokkien mee too.  Another place for curry mee is at Lorong Seratus Tahun, the original – much cheaper than the SS2, PJ offshoot.
  • Chulia Lane’s Sin Kheng Aun Hainanese Restaurant for their tau teh (silver pomfret) assam. Speak hainanese with the boss but you still won’t get any discount.
  • Macalister Road’s Yi Garden for sar hor fun and ee foo mee. For non-penangites, those are fried hor fun and yee mee in gravy.
  • Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling’s Liyaqat Ali Nasi Kandar aka nasi kandar beratur (queue). No explanation needed.
  • Lebuh Campbell’s Yee Heong for dim sum, noodles and Chinese meal dishes.
  • Transfer Road’s roti canai stall
  • Stall in Star Hotel at junction of Jalan Cheong Fatt Tze and Lebuh Carnarvon for hokkien mee.  Be there early!
  • Fatty Loh chicken rice in Jalan Fettes, Tanjong Tokong for chicken rice, spring rolls, vinegar pork trotters and hot sour vegetables.
